George Matthews in christening gown, c. 1890. The gown is made of wool, silk, and ostrich feathers. It was worn by several generations in St. James and can be seen in the exhibit. Teddy bear, c. 1905.  Long Island Museum.  Teddy bears began in a Brooklyn toy store in 1904 after Theodore Roosevelt, who they were named for, refused to shoot a tethered bear during a hunting trip.
