Guided Gallery Tour

Join the museum educators for a guided tour of Growing Up on Long Island in the History Museum. Tour begins at 2 p.m. and will last approximately 45 minutes. Space is limited; please call to register.

Marlene Hochman, Founder and Director of the Doll and Toy Museum of New York City, will discuss the history of popular dolls, toys, and games. Bring along your childhood favorites and share nostalgia for these old friends.

Kelly McMasters shares her memories of her happy childhood in the 70s and 80s living next to a controversial nuclear laboratory that leaked toxic waste into the town’s water supply.

Join in a lively discussion of this 2009 Long Island Reads selection, written by Doris Kearns Goodwin then enjoy David Houston’s staged reading of passages from this wonderful memoir of childhood on Long Island and romance with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Marty Adler, founder of the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame, will present an afternoon of anecdotes and photographs about baseball, the Dodgers and life in Brooklyn.

Take-a-Trip: Childhood, ‘Dem Bums and the American Way
April 21, 7:45 a.m.

Inspired by Doris Kearns Goodwin’s memoir Wait Till Next Year, this trip down memory lane takes you to the former stadium sites of the titanic rivals: Yankees (South Bronx), Giants (Harlem) and Dodgers (Crown Heights.) Along the way see more famous Manhattan sites, historic Brooklyn Heights and the breathtaking skyline view. Eat lunch at Ms. Goodwin’s childhood favorite, Junior’s. There is an $82 per person non-refundable fee. Space is limited. Please register by March 15, 2009.

Movie & Discussion: Long Island Grows Up
June 11, 6:30 p.m.

Participants in this program will view film footage from the "Long Island Grows Up" exhibit, part of the Age in America collaboration between the Library and Long Island Museum. Following the film, members of the audience can share their own memories of growing up on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn or Manhattan.
